When managing a task management or blogging platform, the Category List screen often serves as a backbone for organizing content. However, even small design inconsistencies can hurt usability, professionalism, and overall user trust.
Recently, while reviewing a Category List UI, we spotted several UI/UX issues that are common across many applications. Let’s break them down and explore how to fix them.
1. Inconsistent Capitalization
- Issue: Some categories were written in Title Case (Jira Alternatives in 2025), while others appeared in lowercase (digital marketing).
- Why it matters: Inconsistent formatting reduces readability and makes the UI look unpolished.
- Fix: Enforce a consistent capitalization rule, such as Title Case for all categories.
2. Unclear Serial Number Label
- Issue: The column header read “S No”.
- Why it matters: This is ambiguous and not user-friendly.
- Fix: Replace with “#” or “S. No.” for clarity.
3. Extra Row Divider
- Issue: An empty horizontal line appeared after the last row.
- Why it matters: Users may think there are more entries or experience confusion.
- Fix: Remove extra row borders when no data exists.
4. Misaligned Table Content
- Issue: Text alignment in the Category and Actions columns didn’t feel uniform.
- Why it matters: Even slight misalignments make the interface look sloppy.
- Fix: Apply consistent padding and text alignment across columns.
5. Naming Style Inconsistencies
- Issue: Some categories had year suffixes (2025), others didn’t (Trello Alternatives).
- Why it matters: Lack of consistency creates uncertainty in categorization.
- Fix: Decide a clear naming convention (e.g., always include the year, or never include it).
6. Action Icons Too Close Together
- Issue: The ✏️ (Edit) and 🗑️ (Delete) icons were placed with almost no space in between.
- Why it matters: Users can accidentally delete instead of edit, which is a serious usability risk.
- Fix: Add spacing, or even better, add tooltips and confirmation prompts.
7. Poor Long Text Handling
- Issue: Category names had no truncation or wrapping mechanism.
- Why it matters: A long category title can break the table layout on smaller screens.
- Fix: Implement ellipsis (…) with hover tooltip or allow wrapping.
8. Add Category Button Placement
- Issue: The “➕ Add Category” button was floating in the header without clear grouping.
- Why it matters: Users may overlook it since it isn’t visually connected to the table.
- Fix: Place it above the table in a structured way, styled as a primary action button.
9. Side Menu Highlight Inconsistency
- Issue: The active menu item (Category) was highlighted in orange but felt disconnected from the overall design.
- Why it matters: Navigation consistency improves orientation and trust.
- Fix: Standardize highlights using a bold font + color + indicator bar.
10. Cramped Row Spacing
- Issue: Rows felt tight with minimal padding.
- Why it matters: Cluttered rows reduce readability and make the UI tiring to scan.
- Fix: Add vertical spacing and hover effects for better readability.
